Charlie Johnston ‘s Sunday spuds had a winning flavour to them after an early morning winning round at County Armagh.
 
The Armagh Produce Company director served up 42 points to take the honours in the second club stableford competition of the new year.
 
George Gillespie returned a similar impressive score of 42 points but had to settle for second prize with Charlie’s back nine better on countback.
 
In cold and blustery conditions throughout the day, quite  a number of golfers took to the city course. The winter sunshine was however, a pleasant relief from the previous day’s rain when only a dozen hardy golfers braved the elements.
 
As a result, Saturday’s stableford competition was reduced to a Club Sweep and Leo King took the only prize with a very impressive 44 points.
 
Leo was also in the prizes on Sunday, taking third with 40 points, and his better back nine leaving Tom Murray and Jim Wilson, both also returning 40 points, to pick up fourth and fifth prizes respectively.
 
Prizes can be collected in the County Armagh Golf Club Pro shop.

Ladies - This is your first social event of the year.

The Lady Captain, Barbara and the Committee invite you to our annual Coffee Party on Friday 21st January at 7.00pm sharp in the Club House.

A Fork Supper will be served followed by a table quiz. The cover charge is £6 which includes a glass of wine and is to be paid at the door.

 

N.B.-SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING

The Special General Meeting to elect two ladies to The Committee will be held,sharply, at 7.30PM in the Club House on the night of the Coffee Party preceding the Supper.

Spring Team Competition 13th Jan to 23rd Feb

See Notice Board in Locker Room to find out your Team. Teams will be posted during the first week but anyone who has entered and paid for the competition may play as of the 13th January.

Best 7 scores per team to count each week. All 6 weeks to count for overall score.

 Play as often as you like in one week and your best score will be recorded.

You must sign the "Intention To Play Book" for each card, and clearly mark your card , Spring Competition, Team Name, Week No & Card No.

ANDY Conn shook off the effects of the holiday festivities to get his new year off to a winning start at County Armagh Golf Club on Sunday.

In fact he left all trailing in his wake in the first stableford competition of 2011 with a superb winning 45 points – four points clear of his nearest rival.

A birdie two at the third hole also boosted his winnings on the day and he could even afford an out-of-bound shot at the last hole.

Mark Gillen led the chasing pack and along with Davy Spratt and Norman Mallon recorded 41 points to claim second, third and fourth place respectively on countback.

After 40-years a member, Tom Calvert has been officially unveiled as Captain of County Armagh Golf Club for 2011.

Out-going Captain Michael Grant presented long-serving Tom with his new navy blue Captain's blazer on New Year's Day.

The inauguration took place in front of a packed clubhouse. Earlier in the day Tom launched an impressive first tee-shot to signal the start of the new club captain's reign.

In his opening speech to members, Tom said he was honoured to take on the new Captain's role and looked forward to a successful and challenging year ahead.

Tom joined County Armagh Golf Club in 1971 and during four decades since has served in various club positions including Council Member, Professional, Greens and Bar Convenor.

Along the way the affable Tom has also collected many prizes, among them the matchplay Smyth Cup which he has won on three occasions, and George Compston's Captain's Day Prize.

But it looks like his playing may be curtailed somewhat at the beginning of this new year as Tom has damaged and possibly broken a bone in his foot which will keep him out of action for a week or two.

However, presenting the first prize of the New Year was among Tom's first duties and after a very competitive Captain's Inauguration 9-Hole Competition, Richard Stewart emerged as the outright winner. Quite a number of scores in the early 20s were believed to be in the reckoning until the winning score of 24 points was announced, launching special New Year's Day celebrations.
