Mixed Greensomes Fri 10 June

Jerome and Mary mix it up for win

Jerome Leer and Mary Black were perfectly in the picture for the Star Sound and Visions sponsored Mixed Greensomes competition.

The pair collected first prize from sponsor Mark Frazer and Club Captain after a recording a fantastic winning score of nett 58.

They were just six over after nine holes and after 18 had used up just a further two shots of their 20-handicap.

Second placed Jarlath McReynolds and Ann Canavan, with a handicap of 13, opened their round birdie, birdie, par on their way to a level par score after nine holes. And like their winning opponents Jerome and Mary, they used only two further shots of their handicap on the return trek to finish with an equally impressive 59 nett score.

Regulars in the mixed prizes, husband and wife Andy and Gail Steed collected third prize with a nett 62.5 of their 18.5 handicap.

And Ian and Ann O'Hea were fourth with a nett 63 score.

Club Stableford Sun 5 June

1st Nicky Daly 43 pts

2nd Mark Gillen 40 pts

3rd Charlie Johnston 40 pts

4th Marty Oliver 40 pts

5th Oisin Gill 40 pts

Points mean prizes for Nicky

Nicky Daly had all the parts and all the points he needed to win the club stableford.

The local car parts dealer stored a winning 43 points to secure the top prize by three clear points.

Five pars over the front nine was the basis of his 21 points at the half-way stage, and with a further five over the back nine holes for 22 points, his final total 43 was always going to be hard to beat.

Mark Gillen came closest and yet was still three points off  Nicky's tally. His excellent back nine of 22 points on top of 18 points from the front nine holes earned him second place ahead of spud-man Charlie Johnston who also record 40 points. Martin Oliver's 19 and 21 points front and back nine respectively, took fourth prize and Oisin Gill was fifth with 23 points and 17 for a similar final score of 40 points.

Alan lifts prestigious Henry White trophy

Handyman Alan Magwood nailed his game perfectly to win the Henry White Memorial trophy with a superb nett 64 score.

Competition sponsor Philip White of Philip White Tyres Ltd presented the prestigious cup in front of a packed clubhouse. The annual open is one of the club's major competitions and the ideal conditions brought more than 200 golfers to the city course on the day.

But none had the measure of 18-handicapper Alan Magwood who produced his best round of the season to date to win the coveted trophy. Two over after five holes, a double bogey six at the sixth hole spoiled an otherwise steady front nine for Alan. That steady golf continued over the back nine with a further four pars and a nett 64 finish which ultimately sealed the win.

Second-placed four handicapper Neil Cromwell shot a hugely impressive gross 69 and his nett 65 might have taken the top prize on any other day. Neil was level par after nine holes with birdies at the fourth and eighth holes covering dropped shots at five and nine. Two further birdies were recorded at 10 and 12 before he dropped a shot at the par three 15th and finished with five straight pars.

That exceptional back nine pushed Johnny Palmer - who also finished with a nett 65 - back into third place. Double bogeys at the 13th, 16th and 17th holes cost him dearly in a round which opened with a birdie three.

And it took a further countback to separate fourth, fifth and sixth places, Paddy Burns, Patrick Kelly and Nat McGeown collecting the prizes respectively, each with nett 66 scores. Five pars and a birdie three at 14 earned Paddy fourth prize, and Pat Kelly was a shot better offover his back nine.

Dungannon Golf Club's Conor McCaughey, a three-handicapper, picked up the first Gross Prize with a Gross 70, Daniel McAneny was second with a gross 71 and Jarleth McReynolds was third with a gross 73.

Pierce Purcell 'paddy'

Pierce Purcell make bit of 'Paddy' of their match

Team captain Paddy Duffy was gutted after his Pierce Purcell team suffered defeat at the hands of Edenmore in the competition matchplay stages at Killymoon Golf Club on Sunday.

The County Armagh outfit had qualified in third place in the qualifing round at Killymoon two weeks ago and with a draw against Edenmore were confident they would progress.

After four matches against Edenmore however, it was all square, 2-2. And in a thrilling climax the final County Armagh pairing of Ian Millar and Paul Corvan required a win at the last hole to take the match into extra-time. Sadly they secured only a 'half' and their match was lost, Edemore clinching victory 3-2 and a place in the next round.

Earlier Paddy Hicks and John Lowe led the County Armagh challenge but suffered defeat on the final hole when their opponents sank a 30ft putt to win one-up.

Colin McIlroy and Mickey Cullen similarly looked to have secured the win leading by one hole with just one to play. But they too lost the last hole for their match to finish all square.

Declan Lenagh and Derek McKeever meanwhile, were two down with two to play, but recovered to halve their match. And Paul Wasson and Oisin Gill grabbed a win on the final hole after their match was level after 17 holes.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, the final match can determine the outcome and so it proved, County Armagh disappointingly made their exit.

Ulster Cup Team Triumph

Ulster Cup team 'Burn' it up against Carnlea

County Armagh’s Ulster Cup team secured their place in the third round of the competition after and inspired victory on home turf.

Team Captain Paddy Burns' tactical skills were to the forefront of this win against Carnlea who County Armagh trailed four matches to three and nine holes after the first leg the previous week-end. Nigel McMahon, Barry McGurgan and Marty Oliver had secured those three vital match victories to give County Armagh any chance of progressing.

Unfortunately Nigel McMahon was unavailable for the home leg, but Captain Burns made an exceptional replacement selection in Declan McReynolds who put his local course knowledge to best use to win in outstanding fashion 8 and 6.

Marty Daly also secured an excellent victory 2 and 1 against retired barrister and popular after dinner speaker Peter Walsh.

Barry McGurgan fought back bravely from four holes down to lose narrowly by one hole and Andy Conn lost 2 and 1, but the margin of defeat still fitted with Burns bigger plan.

It was left to Ulster Cup team rookie Royal School teacher Ian Millar and he delivered fabulously a 3 and 1 win to leave the way clear for Marty Oliver to follow up with a similar impressive victory 5 and 3.

Anchor man Mickey McGurk just failed on the last hole to secure a win but with the score all-square at seven points each the match was to be decided in holes won and County Armagh claimed overall victory by five holes.

County Armagh can now look forward to meeting either Masserene or Scrabo Golf Club in the third round.

Richard rains in club stroke prize

Richard Stewart refused to allow the high winds and heavy rain deter him from winning the Club Stroke competition.

His nett 69 was in fact the only score below 70 in the worst of playing conditions, his nearest rival Anthony Farrell with a nett 70.

Steady scoring including a birdie three at the par four second hole saw him eight over at the turn and despite three double bogeys on the homeward trek he was still able to record a nett 68 finish.

Double bogeys at the first and sixteenth holes were Anthony Farrell's undoing in a similar steady round and with a nett 70 he deservedly picked up the runners up prize.

Conor McGurgan was the model of consistency for the best gross 74, nett 71 and collected first prize in Category One where G Hughes was runner up.

A half dozen pars for a nett 70 round helped secured first prize in Category Two for Michael Cullen and Michael Macklin picked up the runners up prize with a nett 73.

In Category 3 it was Stephen McGarvey who collected the winning prize with a nett 72, and becoming a familiar face in the prize winners recently, Hugh McEneaney was second.

Patsy picks up Lonsdale Cup

Patsy Hegarty will have his name inscribed on the magnificent Lonsdale Cup as the 118th winner.

The impressive trophy first presented to County Armagh Golf Club in 1893, was once again carefully taken from the secure trophy cabinet to be presented by Captain Tom Calvert at the conclusion of the Digby's Restaurant, Killylea sponsored stroke competition.

More than 200 golfers, some from as far away as Scotland, played in the annual competition. But none could find the winning form enjoyed by 10-handicapper Patsy. His nett 66 was one shot better than four others who each returned nett 67 and had to be separated by countback.

Patsy was just four over after nine holes and used up just a further two shots of his handicap on the trek back where three birdies including one at the last brought him that winning score.

Paul McCreesh picked up second prize with a nett 67. Three double bogeys cost him the big prize but with three others also recording nett 67, was still delighted to collect his prize.

Micael McParland, John Toner and Johnny Palmer were the three others who finished with nett 67, and after countback picked up third, fourth and fifth prizes respectively.

And Alec Nesbitt secured the sixth nett prize with a nett 68.

Conor McGurgan, playing off a handicap of 3, returned the best gross score on the day, a 74. Neil Cromwell (4) was second best gross with a 75 and Andrew Millar (8) third with a gross score 76.
