STEVENSON'S SUPER SUNDAY

A level-par round warrants victory in most competitions, and Stewart Stevenson's superb 70-stroke performance earned exactly that in the stableford event at County Armagh Golf Club on Sunday 25 June.

The three-handicapper's early endeavours meandered rather tamely, as bogeys at the 1st and 3rd and pars elsewhere left him two over par after seven holes. However, Stewart burst into life at that point, firing birdies at the 8th, 10th, 12th and 14th.

That majestic birdie blitz was checked only slightly by dropped shots at the 9th and 16th before the Senior Cup and Senior Cowdy stalwart closed with two serene pars to complete his 39-point prevailing tally.

JENKINS JOY ON RICHARD'S BIG DAY

It was on the hoisting of the official County Armagh Golf Club flag that the showpiece fixture in the local golfing calendar got under way in earnest.

With the lady members and juvenile girls and boys already having competed in their various categories earlier in the week, 293 men filled the city fairways on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 June in the hope of grabbing glory on Richard Stewart's Captain's Day weekend.

There was no discernible difference in playing conditions between the two days so the entire field was faced with merciful dryness, a stiff and challenging wind and a golf course looking suitably resplendent. It all added up to a fair but exacting golfing examination — to the best man the spoils.

Away from the sporting action, family, friends and members joined Richard for a Saturday coffee morning that provided the perfect opportunity for all those in attendance to catch up with old pals, admire the wonderful array of prizes on offer, and wish our endlessly industrious and infectiously enthusiastic Captain all the very best.

The pristine clubhouse and environs and the refreshments enjoyed by everyone present also served as testimony to the club staff and volunteers who work so diligently to ensure that such events run smoothly.

Meanwhile, we were down to serious business back out on the golf course, where a stunning one-over-par gross 71 made Samuel Jenkins a most worthy Captain's Day champion.

County Armagh Golf Club Captain's Day winner Sam Jenkins is presented with the new Captain's Day Perpetual Cup and his winner's prize, a Powakaddy, by Captain Richard Stewart and his wife Eileen.

Having previously plied his golfing trade in Loughgall, Samuel joined County Armagh only in March but has found the club to his immediate liking.

This was never more in evidence than on Captain's Day when the Hamiltonsbawn contender exploded out of the traps with an outward nine comprising seven pars, a solitary bogey and a bonus birdie at the 5th.

Further birdie brilliance followed at the 10th and 12th enabling the then eight-handicapper to depart the 15th green in an incredibly commanding one-under-par position.

A pulled drive at the Lakes meant Jenkins's direct route to the green was impeded by the net that guards the 7th tee box. And, when the Salamander engineer attempted to draw an 8-iron towards the target, he went long and right, his ball nestling in the flower bed beside the 17th tee. Drama and potential heartache.

However, the fortunate lie, the Seve-style recovery shot and the miraculous par that ensued had Jenkins believing that this might indeed be his red-letter day.

After an understandably jittery double bogey at the penultimate hole, Sam composed himself admirably to record a gutsy four at the 18th and put the seal on a fantastic nett 64 and richly deserved Captain's Day success.

Club Stroke Competition – 29th June 2017

The run of poor weather continued for the ladies of Co. Armagh on the last Thursday of June. The morning starters enjoyed a comparatively dry round of golf while the afternoon players had to contend with wet and windy conditions. This was reflected in the scores, some of which owed more to perseverance than golfing prowess. Those who made it into the winner's enclosure were a presented with an array of beautiful gifts which had been sourced from “Devine by Donna”.

A full list of prize winners is set out below but the winner of the Club Stroke with an outstanding score of nett 70 was June Humphries . A delighted June graciously accepted her first prize from the Lady Captain Mrs Gail Steed.

JUNE JOY FOR JUNIOR JOE

The burgeoning reputation of Joe Rooney was enhanced still further as the juvenile member won the June Medal at County Armagh Golf Club.

In the same month that he completed his GCSE examinations, Rooney had added cause for celebration after shooting a stunning one-under-par gross 69 in the competition held on Sunday 18 June

In an utterly flawless first 14 holes, Joe found birdies at the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 11th and parred the other 10 to walk onto the Beresford tee-box an awesome four under par.

Then came something of a blip, as the now four-handicapper toiled to a double bogey at that deceptively troublesome 15th before bogeying the Lakes.

Normal order was resumed, however, when the Easter Stableford champion steadied himself admirably to par the last to holes – the finishing touches to a tremendous nett 64.

Young Rooney follows in the footsteps of Kieran Grimley and Gary McAleavey, who have  secured the other two monthly medals awarded this term. Given his immense talent — and now the absence of that pesky schoolwork to hamper his practice plans over the summer months — Joe seems destined to be a repeated victor.

Joe Rooney is presented with the County Armagh Golf Club June Medal by Alan Johnston of Johnston's Bakery, Scotch Street, Armagh, as Club Captain Richard Stewart looks on.

PADDY'S TOP OF THE SATURDAY CLASS

A scholarly scrap between St Patrick's Grammar School teachers past and present broke out at County Armagh Golf Club on Saturday 17 June, as Paddy Loughran narrowly edged out Gerry Cullen to earn victory in the club stableford competition.

Paddy, Club Captain in 1996, started steadily if unspectacularly as he was five over par and level his handicap for the first five holes.

However, a par at the 6th followed by a birdie two at the Quarry got the retired maths man motoring and he would reach the turn with a superb 21 points.

Loughran's back-nine performance was almost as brilliant as he bashed home pars at the 11th, 12th, 14th and, most impressively, the 17th and 18th on his way to a 20-point homeward haul.

Paddy's fine 41-point total clipped his handicap to 16 and granted him a much deserved success that proves there's still plenty of competitive spirit left in this veteran campaigner.
