DEADLY DOUGAN DELIVERS JULY KNOCKOUT

With Kieran Grimley, Gary McAleavey and Joe Rooney already having tasted monthly glory this season, 119 contenders took to the city’s fairways on 30 July in pursuit of the latest Medal up for grabs at County Armagh Golf Club. And getting his hands on said silverware in the Alexander Mills-sponsored event was Sean Dougan Senior, who laid waste to all of those opponents with a quite peerless Sunday performance.

Dougan has already demonstrated his matchplay prowess this term in qualifying for the latter stages of both the Smith Cup singles and the Charlemont Cup doubles along with his son, also called Sean and no stranger to honours himself. Sean Senior even featured among the prizewinners in June’s ‘9 & Wine’ event but, on this occasion, he proved himself to be more than adept at coping with the challenges posed by the game’s bread-and-butter format: 18-hole strokeplay.

A gross 75 didn't appear to be in the offing when uninspiring early exchanges left Dougan four over par after five holes. However, it was at that juncture that the then 11-handicapper really hit his straps, backing up consecutive pars at the 6th, 7th and 8th with a brilliant birdie at the 9th. Even better than that latently fruitful three-over-par front nine was a homeward dander of just 38 strokes, where another birdie at Sequoias iced a back-nine victory cake also boasting five pars and acceptable bogeys at the 10th, 16th and 18th.

Sean Dougan, winner of the July Medal sponsored by Alexander Mills, is congratulated by County Armagh Golf Club Captain Richard Stewart.

Vera is victorious on Lady Captain's Day

On a day of mixed weather conditions, beautiful sunshine in the morning and heavy downpours of rain in the afternoon, Vera Ellingham emerged as the overall winner of the Lady Captain's prize. Over 90 ladies competed for the array of beautiful prizes which Lady Captain Gail had chosen, including some magnificent handcrafted necklaces designed by Mary Murphy.

Lady Captain Gail hosted the traditional coffee morning for family, friends and club members. The tempting array of scones and tray bakes was once again generously provided by Johnston's bakery. The clubhouse was adorned with beautiful flower arrangements and everything was in perfect condition due to the efforts of Damien the Bar Manager, and Paul the caretaker ably supported by the Ladies Committee.

SCRATCH CUP JOY FOR JARLATH AND JIMMY

Stamina was the watchword at County Armagh Golf Club on Sunday 23 July as the inaugural Scratch Cup competitions saw players complete a gruelling 36 holes in one day as they went in search of the coveted silverware.

This new event was kindly sponsored by FKP Smyth (Restoration, Painting, Decorating) and organised by Jarlath McReynolds and his trusty lieutenants Stewart Stevenson, Richard Stewart and Davy Baird. All those involved deserve credit for overseeing what was such an enjoyable and well-run competition — a unique fixture that is set to remain in the club calendar for years to come.

However, administrative efficiency was not the limit of Jarlath's ambitions on this occasion and, indeed, the three-handicapper produced a golfing masterclass to triumph in the Senior Scratch Cup, which was competed for by those in the 0-5 handicap bracket. With scoring as glorious as the summer sunshine overhead, McReynolds posted an exceptional 36-hole total of 139.

In a two-under-par opening round, the affable schoolteacher recorded a hat-trick of consecutive birdies at the 5th, 6th and 7th and another at the 12th. And, during a second round of 71, Jarlath notched further birdies at the 8th and 17th as he ran out a more than worthy maiden Senior Scratch Cup champion.

Scratch Cup winners Jarlath McReynolds (Senior) and Jimmy Wilson (Junior) are presented with their trophies by competition sponsor Francie Smyth from FKP Smyth Ltd and Club Captain Richard Stewart. They are joined by other prizewinners on the day (L-R): John Maguire, Shea Smyth, Adam Cromwell, Philip Kelly, Stewart Hall and Joe Rooney.

JOHNNY SHOWS THE WILL TO WIN

Despite a Saturday of fine scoring at County Armagh Golf Club on 22 July, many may have regarded club professional Will Carey's provision of hotdogs, burgers and beers on the 11th tee as the day's very best result.

This was Will's first Professional's Competition since taking up post in April, and that hearty sustenance certainly went down well with the stroke event's 176-strong field.

Indeed, seemingly finding the surprise barbecue particularly to his liking was Johnny Brown, who turned in a tremendous display to take the top honours with a nett 66.

Brown's birdie at Lady Anne's Walk immediately preceded a disappointing double bogey five at the 3rd, but the string of four consecutive pars with which he reached the turn had the then nine-handicapper very handily placed at the halfway stage.

Back-to-back birdies at the 11th and 12th — surely owing much to Will's welcome nourishment just beforehand! — were the highlights of an equally impressive homeward trek that also included two pars and four bogeys.

Johnny eventually signed for a classy gross 74 to seal his victory and ensure he'll tee it up off eight next time out.

Johnny Brown, winner of the County Armagh Golf Club Professional's Competition, is presented with his prize by Adam Kerr, Assistant Professional, and Richard Stewart, Club Captain. Also pictured are other prizewinners (L-R) Bernard Grimley, John Maguire, Adam Cromwell, Don McKee and Roy Davis.

Charity Stableford Competition sponsored by Specsavers/Hearcare 27th July 2017

Thursday 27 th July saw the traditional visiting Lady Captains event in County Armagh Golf Club. Eighteen visiting Captains were welcomed with with a delicious array of scones and traybakes, generously provided by Johnston's Home Bakery, for their Coffee Morning before they participated in a 9 hole competition on the Demense course. The visitors all expressed admiration for the condition of the course.

The main competition for the County Armagh Ladies was the Charity Stableford, which this year has attracted a new sponsor, Specsavers/Hearcare. Despite mixed weather conditions, fifty three ladies competed in the 18 hole competition with a further eight in the nine hole competition.

At the evening prizegiving Lady Captain Gail welcomed everyone to a busy clubhouse with a special mention for Sharon who was representing the new sponsors. The club Captain Richard Stewart was also present and wished Gail every success for her upcoming Lady Captain's Day on Saturday 29 th July.

The overall winner on the day was Carmel Cassidy with 38 points. Bernie Rice secured second spot with 37 points, beating Catherine McAnerney on a count back.
