COUNTY Armagh Golf Club welcomed its many sponsors to its course and clubhouse recently.
Hosted annually, ‘Sponsors Day' is an opportunity for the club to say ‘thank-you' to those local businesses and individuals who have supported the club – financially and otherwise – during the year.
Upwards of 40 sponsors and their guests played the course in a stableford competition before enjoying a sumptuous evening meal with wine. Prizes for this year's event were kindly sponsored by @Seven Hills Restaurant.
Speaking at the evening presentation, County Armagh Captain Richard Stewart said: “Sponsors are the life-blood of any club – especially in the current climate – and their support is very much appreciated.”
Lady Captain Gail Steed added: “County Armagh have a large, vibrant Ladies Section – one of the largest outside of Belfast, and is the envy of many of neighbouring clubs – our sponsors are very much a part of our success and for that we are very thankful
“We also really appreciate that many of our sponsors have been very loyal sponsors over a number of years – in addition this year we have managed to secure a number of new sponsors – and we really value their contribution.”
Sponsors Convenors' Gerry Kelly and Elizabeth Mawhinney were also praised for their efforts.

Saturday 9th September 2017
102 ladies, including over 30 visitors, competed for the prestigious Armaghdale Cup on Saturday 9 th September. The ladies challenge cup was originally presented to the club in 1926 by Lady Armaghdale. The competition was once again generously sponsored by G Davidson Business Accounts Services, represented on the night by Francis Davidson.
Lady Captain Gail welcomed Francis and thanked her sincerely for her long-standing support and the fantastic array of beautiful prizes. Indeed, Gail commented that everyone who had participated probably deserved a prize as the weather conditions had been so challenging. She also thanked Ann McDonald, Una Cullinane and Barbara Hamilton for processing the cards.
Ann Mone emerged as the winner with a nett score of 70. Francis Davidson had scored 69 but declined the prize as she was the sponsor. Ann expressed her delight at winning the beautiful first prize and observed it was particularly ironic as Francis had encouraged her to play despite the inclement weather conditions. Denise Murphy took second place with net 70. The gross prize went to Karen Heatherington from Dungannon with 81 shots. Gillian Poole secured third place with nett 72. Another Dungannon lady Lorna Stewart took 4 th place with nett 72 and Paula McCrory secured 5th place with nett 72.

September Medal - Thursday 7 th September 2017
Despite the threat of heavy downpours, 59 ladies turned out to compete for the September Medal. Lady Captain Gail sincerely thanked the sponsor Annette of O L Flowers for attending the prizegiving and bringing with her a beautiful array of floral arrangements which brightened up the clubhouse on an evening which had a distinctly autumnal feel.
The winner of the September medal was Colette McSorley with a magnificent net 64. Accepting her prize Colette thanked Annette for her loyal support for the Ladies Branch and her playing partners who kept her focussed throughout an exemplary round of golf. Lady Captain Gail took second place with a nett 70 just ahead of Jacqueline Donnelly who secured 3 rd place with a 71. Meanwhile Ellen Brady took yet another Gross prize with 81 strokes.

A positively regal golfing performance clinched glory for James King in the annual stroke event sponsored by Hugh McElvanna Drapery and Footwear, who may now have to start stocking some royal regalia in order to satisfy the noble needs of their newest customer.
King's exceptional nett 64 on Sunday 27 August fended off the challenge of 84 opponents and means he's now playing off 19. His peerless scorecard showed symmetrical nines of 42 shots — with one birdie and one par on each — and a welcome absence of any significant errors, as a dozen bogeys provided a solid foundation to James's merited success.
Category 1 prizewinners in the Hugh McElvanna Drapery and Footwear-sponsored stroke event, Joe Rooney and Stewart Stevenson, are congratulated by County Armagh Golf Club Captain, Richard Stewart. The competition was won by James King.

The Woods, Webster and Connolly Cups were contested at County Armagh Golf Club on Saturday 26 August, giving players the opportunity to test their scratch mettle against those in the same handicap bracket.
With the respective tournaments all kindly sponsored by Abbey Bond Lovis Insurance, a sublime gross 70 saw Paul Doyle prevail among the 6-9 handicappers and lift the Woods Silver Salver Trophy. The highlight of Doyle's Sunday stroke victory in June was an eagle at the 14th and he was up to his old tricks again, this time with a spectacular three at the 12th. Fifteen pars and two bogeys elsewhere made up an outstanding level-par offering that clips Paul's handicap to five once more.
Three shots adrift of Doyle and claiming the runner-up spot was Philip Russell, who reached the turn in 37 strokes before producing a marvellous level-par back nine featuring birdies at the 12th and 14th to add to his earlier 2 at the 3rd. Philip's classy gross 73 makes him an eight-handicapper but further downward trajectory seems inevitable.

The Junior Girls' Captain Caoimhe Hillen held her girls' captain's day on Monday 21st August.
Although the weather was damp the day was a success with 18, 9 and 6 hole competitions as well as a putting competition.

Seventy-four ladies took part in this week's Club Stableford competition which was sponsored by the club Professional Mr Will Carey. Lady Captain Gail thanked Will for the very generous display of prizes which he had provided and commended him for the splendid work he has been doing with the juveniles since his arrival in the club.
Winner of first prize was Jacqueline Donnelly, one of the Get into Golf ladies, who returned an excellent score of 39 points, to beat runner up Francis Davidson who also recorded 39 points. Third place honours went to Fionnaula Quinn with 35 points.
