Captain Michael Calvert brought the curtain down on a hugely successful year at County Armagh Golf Club with a presentation of trophies.
As one of the oldest golf club’s in Ireland, a magnificent array of silverware with a combined aged of more than 500 years, is competed for annually by the club’s 700-strong membership.
A packed clubhouse watched on as the many trophies were presented – among them:
- The Lonsdale Cup, a solid silver trophy presented in 1894 by John B Lonsdale, the former High Sherriff and MP for County Armagh.
- The Smith Cup, one of the original club trophies, which was presented by Captain Noel Smith, owner of Glenanne Mills and Callan Valley Mills.
- The Hirsh Cup which was presented to Maisie Hirsh after winning the Swiss Ladies Open in 1923.
Club Captain for 2022 Michael Calvert welcomed winners and guests alike for the evening presentation and thanked the many competition sponsors.
Captain Michael said: “This is an opportunity for me not only to congratulate all the winners, but also to say a big thank-you to the many sponors of our competitions played throughout the year. Your support, not just this year but in past years and hopefully in years to come, is very much valued and appreciated by everyone at County Armagh Golf Club.”
The evening concluded with the announcement of the Golf of the Year – and the winner was Paul McCurry, whose magnificent efforts in the four majors – Captain’s Day, Lonsdale Trophy, Henry and May White Memorial Trophy and the Gerry Lenagh Trophy, accumulated an unrivalled points tally to win the accolade and special trophy.
