The Chest, Heart and Stroke competition has long featured on County Armagh's annual fixture list, and the club maintained its well-established relationship with the local charity with a two-day stableford event on 24 and 25 March.

The long-overdue but most welcome appearance of some spring sunshine combined with the fact that players had the opportunity to compete on both Saturday and Sunday to produce much better overall scoring than had been the case in previous weeks.

However, no one could keep pace with Stephen Nugent, who posted a terrific 43 points to seal first place.

Stephen's success was built largely on an impressive front nine showing five pars and ultimately yielding a massive 24 points.

Thursday's Mary Peters Stableford competition was played in in challenging conditions with heavy rain and cold winds adding to the heavy conditions underfoot. However, Pauline Gingles returned an exceptional score of 39 points to secure first place. Anne Kinsella took second place with 35 points and in third place was Emma Garrigan with 33 points.

Lady Captain Elizabeth Mawhinney warmly welcomed Shirley and Manny Smyth proprietors of Professional Travel who were the sponsors on the night and thanked them most sincerely for their long and generous support of the Ladies' Branch.

In her acceptance speech Pauline thanked Shirley and Manny for their prizes and gave a special mention to her playing partner, Helen McLaughlin, who had kept her focused throughout the 18 holes.

While the snow and rain of the previous two weekends had mercifully departed, the hardly souls competing in the St Patrick's Day Open at County Armagh Golf Club still had to contend with biting winds and the resultant perishing temperatures.

Shea Smyth, however, has long since proved himself to be a man for all seasons, and he topped the leaderboard in the Armatile-sponsored event after a peerless 39-point outing.

The three-handicapper was crowned Golfer of the Year last term and, on recent evidence, looks poised for a similarly successful 2018 campaign.

Governing bodies lead #TheFairWay for Irish Golf in 2018.

Handicapping, one of the hottest topics in golf, is the subject of a new awareness campaign from the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) and the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU).

The governing bodies for golf in Ireland have joined forces in an effort to tackle cheating and safeguard integrity in the handicapping system.

"There is still a culture of tolerating handicap cheating in golf.Just because others are cheating the system does not make it okay," says Pat Finn, CEO of the GUI.
"For club golfers, the integrity of the game depends on each individual observing the spirit and intent of the handicapping system," says Sinead Heraty, CEO of the ILGU.

The awareness campaign runs over two weeks from 21 March to 4 April. Golf clubs and their members will have access to key information and resources on handicapping through the GUI and ILGU website,  www.thefairway.ie

The annual Eileen Steenson Memorial competition which was sponsored this year by the Craic'd Pot Coffee Shop took place on Thursday 22 nd March. The competition is played in memory of Eileen who was an excellent competitor and a great ambassador for Co Armagh Golf Club. Well known in golfing circles throughout Ireland Eileen served as Lady Captain in the club's centenary year 1993. In addition to her activities on the Lady's Committee Eileen devoted a great deal of her time and energies to the juvenile girls who flourished under her guidance.

Unfortunately, Scott King the proprietor of the Craic'd Pot Coffee Shop was unable to attend the prizegiving. The Lady Captain Elizabeth Mawhinney thanked Scott for his generous sponsorship of the competition and welcomed the ladies who had participated in event.

Ann Atwell was the overall winner with a score of 36 points.

The persistent rainfall – which carried on from where the preceding week's hefty snowfall left off – didn't exactly hint at the arrival of spring-like conditions at County Armagh Golf Club.

Nevertheless, both the reintroduction of an 18-hole course and the sight of a sponsor's name on the weekend fixture list did at least indicate that the start of the full competitive season isn't too far away.

The Four-Ball Eclectic on Saturday 10 March was kindly supported by DS Refrigeration Ltd and saw one particularly deadly quartet keep their cool to leave their rivals feeling the chill.

Jonathan McKnight, Derick Hynes, Stephen Catterall and David Leeman have been no strangers to individual awards in recent years.

Four-Ball Eclectic competition sponsor Declan Slevin of DS Refrigeration, along with his son, presented prizes to Stephen Catterall and David Leeman from the winning team, and Gary McAleavey from the third-placed group. Also pictured is County Armagh Golf Club Captain, Colm Shannon.
