Stamina was the watchword at County Armagh Golf Club on Sunday 23 July as the inaugural Scratch Cup competitions saw players complete a gruelling 36 holes in one day as they went in search of the coveted silverware.
This new event was kindly sponsored by FKP Smyth (Restoration, Painting, Decorating) and organised by Jarlath McReynolds and his trusty lieutenants Stewart Stevenson, Richard Stewart and Davy Baird. All those involved deserve credit for overseeing what was such an enjoyable and well-run competition — a unique fixture that is set to remain in the club calendar for years to come.
However, administrative efficiency was not the limit of Jarlath's ambitions on this occasion and, indeed, the three-handicapper produced a golfing masterclass to triumph in the Senior Scratch Cup, which was competed for by those in the 0-5 handicap bracket. With scoring as glorious as the summer sunshine overhead, McReynolds posted an exceptional 36-hole total of 139.
In a two-under-par opening round, the affable schoolteacher recorded a hat-trick of consecutive birdies at the 5th, 6th and 7th and another at the 12th. And, during a second round of 71, Jarlath notched further birdies at the 8th and 17th as he ran out a more than worthy maiden Senior Scratch Cup champion.
Scratch Cup winners Jarlath McReynolds (Senior) and Jimmy Wilson (Junior) are presented with their trophies by competition sponsor Francie Smyth from FKP Smyth Ltd and Club Captain Richard Stewart. They are joined by other prizewinners on the day (L-R): John Maguire, Shea Smyth, Adam Cromwell, Philip Kelly, Stewart Hall and Joe Rooney.

Despite a Saturday of fine scoring at County Armagh Golf Club on 22 July, many may have regarded club professional Will Carey's provision of hotdogs, burgers and beers on the 11th tee as the day's very best result.
This was Will's first Professional's Competition since taking up post in April, and that hearty sustenance certainly went down well with the stroke event's 176-strong field.
Indeed, seemingly finding the surprise barbecue particularly to his liking was Johnny Brown, who turned in a tremendous display to take the top honours with a nett 66.
Brown's birdie at Lady Anne's Walk immediately preceded a disappointing double bogey five at the 3rd, but the string of four consecutive pars with which he reached the turn had the then nine-handicapper very handily placed at the halfway stage.
Back-to-back birdies at the 11th and 12th — surely owing much to Will's welcome nourishment just beforehand! — were the highlights of an equally impressive homeward trek that also included two pars and four bogeys.
Johnny eventually signed for a classy gross 74 to seal his victory and ensure he'll tee it up off eight next time out.
Johnny Brown, winner of the County Armagh Golf Club Professional's Competition, is presented with his prize by Adam Kerr, Assistant Professional, and Richard Stewart, Club Captain. Also pictured are other prizewinners (L-R) Bernard Grimley, John Maguire, Adam Cromwell, Don McKee and Roy Davis.

On a day when the course bathed in searing sunshine, Mark Keogh turned in a suitably red-hot performance to grab the glory at County Armagh Golf Club.
In the Sunday stroke competition on 16 July, Keogh's winning nett 62 scorecard was a fuss-free affair, comprising as it did a neat-and-tidy 10 pars and eight bogeys.
Mark has had his handicap slashed from 16 to 14 on account of this impressive gross 78 but that should cause him few problems in the weeks ahead, especially if temperatures remain high enough for his liking.
The 14th hole at County Armagh: par 4, index 9, Sequoias.

An outstanding nett 63 on 15 July enabled Philip Richards to get his hands on the latest piece of silverware on offer at County Armagh Golf Club, namely the Allen Cup.
The stroke competition sponsored by JR McMahon Menswear was clearly tailor-made for Richards and, after just six holes, he had fashioned a highly agreeable position of being four under his handicap.
The towering left-hander's round then threatened to come apart at the seams with consecutive double bogeys at the 7th and 8th halting his progress. However, in the face of this potential adversity, Philip certainly measured up, posting pars to suit at the 9th, 14th and 15th in addition to a bespoke birdie at the 11th as he recaptured that early momentum.
Richards concluded proceedings with a pair of nicely fitting fives to complete a debonair performance that saw him eclipse his 172 Saturday opponents and secure a hard-earned two-shot handicap reduction.
County Armagh Golf Club President, Walter Neville, presents the Allen Cup to Philip Richards and daughter Nina after daddy's win in the JR McMahon Menswear-sponsored competition. Also pictured are category 2 winner, Alec Nesbitt, and runner-up, Gerry Kelly.
