August Medal win for Stephen

STEPHEN McGarvey looks assured his place in the County Armagh Golf Club Championship final after winning the August Medal with an impressive nett 64.

The 18 handicapper produced the winning score in the penultimate medal competitions of the year from which the top 20 players will this year battle it out for championship honours next month.

He was just five over par after nine holes and used up just a further seven shots of his handicap on the homeward trek to sign for that winning score of nett 64.

Ronan O'Reilly is another who will likely contest the championship after taking the runners up prize in this competition, adding 19 championship points to that already accummulated throughout the year. The 10-handicapper was just four over par at the turn and dropped only a further shot on the back nine following a birdie and then double bogey at the 11th and 12 holes to finish with a nett 65.

Anthony Farrell's nett 66 deservedly took the honours in the 0-12 handicap category, James Johnston losing out narrowly on a back nine countback after he returned a similar nett 66.

Richard Stewart claimed the 13-handicap category prize with a nett 68, again winning on countback from Michael Macklin on a similar score of nett 68.

Big Eamon Toner was back in the prizes again after signing for a nett 6,7 and as form would have it on the day would, he won it on countback. Harold Price on nett 67 also, losing out on this occasion.

Stewart Stevenson, meanwhile posted the Best Gross score of the day - 70 - and he too being declared a prize winner on countback!
