Patsy picks up Lonsdale Cup

Patsy Hegarty will have his name inscribed on the magnificent Lonsdale Cup as the 118th winner.

The impressive trophy first presented to County Armagh Golf Club in 1893, was once again carefully taken from the secure trophy cabinet to be presented by Captain Tom Calvert at the conclusion of the Digby's Restaurant, Killylea sponsored stroke competition.

More than 200 golfers, some from as far away as Scotland, played in the annual competition. But none could find the winning form enjoyed by 10-handicapper Patsy. His nett 66 was one shot better than four others who each returned nett 67 and had to be separated by countback.

Patsy was just four over after nine holes and used up just a further two shots of his handicap on the trek back where three birdies including one at the last brought him that winning score.

Paul McCreesh picked up second prize with a nett 67. Three double bogeys cost him the big prize but with three others also recording nett 67, was still delighted to collect his prize.

Micael McParland, John Toner and Johnny Palmer were the three others who finished with nett 67, and after countback picked up third, fourth and fifth prizes respectively.

And Alec Nesbitt secured the sixth nett prize with a nett 68.

Conor McGurgan, playing off a handicap of 3, returned the best gross score on the day, a 74. Neil Cromwell (4) was second best gross with a 75 and Andrew Millar (8) third with a gross score 76.

Richard rains in club stroke prize

Richard Stewart refused to allow the high winds and heavy rain deter him from winning the Club Stroke competition.

His nett 69 was in fact the only score below 70 in the worst of playing conditions, his nearest rival Anthony Farrell with a nett 70.

Steady scoring including a birdie three at the par four second hole saw him eight over at the turn and despite three double bogeys on the homeward trek he was still able to record a nett 68 finish.

Double bogeys at the first and sixteenth holes were Anthony Farrell's undoing in a similar steady round and with a nett 70 he deservedly picked up the runners up prize.

Conor McGurgan was the model of consistency for the best gross 74, nett 71 and collected first prize in Category One where G Hughes was runner up.

A half dozen pars for a nett 70 round helped secured first prize in Category Two for Michael Cullen and Michael Macklin picked up the runners up prize with a nett 73.

In Category 3 it was Stephen McGarvey who collected the winning prize with a nett 72, and becoming a familiar face in the prize winners recently, Hugh McEneaney was second.

Pierce Purcell 'paddy'

Pierce Purcell make bit of 'Paddy' of their match

Team captain Paddy Duffy was gutted after his Pierce Purcell team suffered defeat at the hands of Edenmore in the competition matchplay stages at Killymoon Golf Club on Sunday.

The County Armagh outfit had qualified in third place in the qualifing round at Killymoon two weeks ago and with a draw against Edenmore were confident they would progress.

After four matches against Edenmore however, it was all square, 2-2. And in a thrilling climax the final County Armagh pairing of Ian Millar and Paul Corvan required a win at the last hole to take the match into extra-time. Sadly they secured only a 'half' and their match was lost, Edemore clinching victory 3-2 and a place in the next round.

Earlier Paddy Hicks and John Lowe led the County Armagh challenge but suffered defeat on the final hole when their opponents sank a 30ft putt to win one-up.

Colin McIlroy and Mickey Cullen similarly looked to have secured the win leading by one hole with just one to play. But they too lost the last hole for their match to finish all square.

Declan Lenagh and Derek McKeever meanwhile, were two down with two to play, but recovered to halve their match. And Paul Wasson and Oisin Gill grabbed a win on the final hole after their match was level after 17 holes.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, the final match can determine the outcome and so it proved, County Armagh disappointingly made their exit.

Junior Cowdy exit

Junior Cowdy have 'Art' knocked out of them

Art McCrory's Junior Cowdy team put up a spirited fightback against Omagh Golf Club but sadly exited the competition after losing by just two holes in Sunday's first round second leg play-off at County Armagh.

Three matches and four holes down after the first leg at Omagh two weeks previous, McCrory recurited four new faces for the home match. And it almost proved a successful move. The County Armagh team won three matches 2 & 1 to overturn the deficit but the fourth match was sadly lost 4 & 3.

Ironically that losing partnership, team captain Art McCrory and Gary Lappin, had been the County Armagh team's only winners at Omagh. Stephen Weir and Gerry Kelly, Tony Fagan and Club Vice-Captain Brendan Smith, Brendan Lynch and Gerry Doyle all lost in that away leg.

They had it all to do on the home leg and in a spirited fighback by Gerry Doyle and Gerry Kelly, new recruits Alan Magwood and Richard Stewart, Dudley Marjoram and Tim Teehan each chalked up wins. Unfortunately McCrory and Lappin couldn't find the winning form they had enjoyed at Omagh and lost the fourth match 4 & 3. Omagh won by two holes.

Ronan rolls up for stableford win

Ronan O'Reilly chalked up 43 points to win the Club Stableford on Sunday. And he was five points clear of the rest of the field on the day.

Opening with five pars in a row, Ronan had 22 points on his card by the half-way stage. And with a further three pars and a birdie four at the par five 12th hole, he added another 21 points for an untouchable 43 points.

In-form Niall McGeown came closest to Ronan with 38 points, recording 19 over the front nine and 19 on the return trek, to take the runners up prize.

However, Ryan McVeigh will know a double bogey six at the last hole cost him that runners up prize. His 37 points still secured him Category One's winning prize. Jerome Leer was two points adrift and picked up the category's runner up prize.

Alec Nesbitt too had a tale of woe to tell - no scores at the 15th and 16th holes and with 37 points had to settle for runners up in Category 2 where Paul Kelly's 35 points - 21 from the front nine and 14 from the back - earned him second.

Hugh McEneaney, a winner the previous day, continued his winning form for the Category 3 first prize with 34 points beating Brendan Lynch, also recording 34 points, on countback.
