Gail Lifts Centenary Trophy

A large turnout of ladies played for the prestigious centenary trophy which was very generously sponsored by Stirling Financial Services.

The top score on the day was returned by the in-form Newry Road golfer Gail Steed. Gail's 67 nett strokes was one clear of Lorraine Megaw and Una Cullinnane who each had 68 with Lorraine's better back nine securing the runner up position.

In a packed clubhouse the Lady Captain Hilary gave a warm welcome and Paula McCrory presented the prizes to the various winners on behalf of the sponsor. The Lady Captain thanked Paula for her continued support of the ladies section and wished all the teams well for the finals over the next couple of weeks. The full results are as follows:

Cat A: Barbara Gartland 70.Cat B: Karen Edgar71. Cat C: Maura McCreesh 72. Cat D: Rita Grimley 70. The front nine belonged to Teresa Corrigan and Bernie Rice collected the back nine while the top par lady was Bea Gordon.

Four Ladies Teams Contest Ulster Finals

What a year it's been for the ladies teams from County Armagh Golf Club. Four of our teams are contesting Ulster finals over the next couple of weeks, beginning on 24 th and 25 th Aug when.

Our Junior foursomes team led by captain Pauline Vallely. Pauline has a strong panel of players who will play Edenmore in Royal Belfast on the Sat. On their way to the final they had 5 wins including Royal Co Down, Shandon Park and Portnoo in the semie's.

The Intermediate team are led by Colette McAleavey. These girls strolled into the final with a decisive win over Carrickfergus in Moyola. The team are progressing nicely and will be difficult opposition for Belivor in the final on Sunday.

The Junior Cup Team is captained by Ellen Brady. They also played their semi- final in Moyola against Galgorm and again returned to Armagh with the spoils. They play Killymoon in Royal Belfast on Sunday and this is the first of two derby matches in the finals.

The Miele team captain is Paula McCrory and they overcame City of Derry in the last four to claim a place in the final. They will play Mannan Castle in the final in Concra Wood on Mon 2nd Sept, another derby match.

It is a great honour to represent your club and the captains of the teams would like to thank all the squad members for their great commitment to the teams. Support at both venues would be appreciated and we wish all the teams the best of luck.

Paul and Catherine Winners

Over fifty people played in the Margaret Dean greensomes on Friday last at Armagh Golf Club. This competition is very generously sponsored by Noel Conn Accountants Lower English Street Armagh. In a closely fought finish Paul Doyle and Catherine Corrigan emerged ahead with a net score of 62. Just half a shot behind was the combination of Ciaran and Mary Black, while third place with a score of 64 were Stewart Stevenson and Lorainne Megaw.

The Lady captain Hilary Johnston presented the winners with their beautiful prizes and thanked all for their support of this great competition and the sponsor Noel Conn.

Carina continues her winning streak!

Fifty seven ladies played on yet another lovely day on Thursday. The course is still playing very well. The Ian Donaldson Stableford Competition was very generously sponsored by J Hatty & Co.

Lady Captain thanked the sponsors for their continuing support for the Ladies Branch.

Carina Oliver who has been playing exceptional golf over the last few months took first place with 40 points, Bridget McEneaney and Carolyn McCall were 2 nd and 3 rd respectively with 38 points each.

Summer Open won by Karen

Forty eight ladies braved the elements in Armagh to compete for the Summer Open Competition on Thursday last. There were a number of visiting ladies from neighbouring clubs however they were not deterred by the constant heavy showers.

This competition was very generously sponsored by Virtuoso, Scotch Street and proprietor Anne Gormley was on hand to present the prizes.

Karen Edgar came out on top with thirty eight points, matched by Olivia Bradley who also carded thirty eight points with Karen edging the contest on a countback. The gross prize was collected by Paula McCrory with twenty four gross points. In an incredibly tight competition the next three competitors were just one point back from the winner on thirty seven, with Grace McGowan securing third ahead of Jacqueline Kelly and Eileen Fitzsimons in fourth and fifth place respectively.

The category prizes were as follows:

A – Siobhan Donnelly – 36 points

B – Lorraine Megaw – 34 points

C – Vera Ellingham – 35 points

D – Margaret Oakes – 29 points

Front nine – Gina Morris, 19 points

Vera, Myrtle and Brigid waltz to victory

The Ladies Branch organised a waltz competition as part of County Armagh Open Week on Monday last. This competition was very generously sponsored by Philip Murphy & Associates Dental Practice, Russell Street, Armagh.

The top team on the day was Vera Ellingham, Myrtle Rhodie and Brigid McEnaney with a total of 78 points. Runners-up were Ann McDonald, Eilish Grimes and Paula McCrory, while third place went to Frances Toner, Kay Loye and Marie Digby. Finishing in fourth place was the team of Angela McBride, Barbara Gartland and Teresa McVeigh, while Margaret Gordon, Ann Attwell and Irene Lutton were fifth.

Ann Black shot nearest the pin on the 7 th hole while Teresa McVeigh was closest on the 11 th . The longest drive was picked up by Paula McCrory on the 17 th hole.

A number of visiting ladies took part in the competition including players from Castlerock Golf Club, Mannan Castle Golf Club and Beech Park Golf Club, Dublin.

Lady Captain Hilary Johnston presented the prizes on behalf of the sponsor and thanked him for his continued support of the ladies branch.

Carina Cream of the Crop

A large turnout of ladies took part in stableford competition on Thursday last. Conditions were good with bright sunshine throughout the day and only the ladies who teed up late in the evening got the heavy shower. The Ellie Maine trophy is very generously sponsored by Daily Bake Hamiltonsbawn Road Armagh.

Carina Oliver returned a magnificent score of 45 stableford points to lift the cup. Carina is playing great golf this year and has featured many times among the prize winners. Kathleen Mallon was 5 points adrift to secure the runner up prize while Vera Ellingham took third place with 39 points.

The following ladies won the category prizes. A: Geraldine Rafferty 37points. B: Ann McDonald 37points. C: Brigid McEneaney39 points. D: Kay Molloy 34 points. The best par lady was Toni McManus's 36 points. The back nine belonged to Pauline Gingles with 20 points and Marjorie Compson's 20 points gave her the front nine prize. A large number of ladies attended the prize giving in the clubhouse, and lady captain Hilary Johnston congratulated the winners and asked Sheila Steenson the proprietor of Daily Bake to present the prizes. Sheila said she was delighted to be associated with the ladies branch and wished them well in the future. There were a number of handicap cuts on the day. Vera, Kathleen and Brigid all lost 1 shot each but Carina lost a whopping 3 shots

Una Shines In The Sun

At sun soaked County Armagh golf course on Thursday last fifty four ladies played in very warm conditions for the United Colors of Benetton sponsored competition. The course is playing like a links with the greens very slick. The top three ladies all returned a net 66 with a count back required to separate them. Una Culinane came out on top closely followed by Eileen Fitzsimons in second place and Kathleen Mallon securing third place.

The lady captain Hilary Johnston presented the prizes on behalf of the sponsor and she thanked them for their very generous sponsorship and continued support of the ladies branch. The Gross prize went to Barbara Gartland and the following ladies were category winners.

A: Valerie Gordon 69. B: Moya Brady 68 C: Vera Ellingham 71 D: Joy Steenson 70. The best score returned for the front nine was Ann Black's 32.5 beating Sylvia Ashe on the count back, and the back nine belonged to Paula McCrory with 34. The nine hole competition was won by Cait Murray. The Par Lady on the day was Collette McAleavey. As a result of the good scores on the day the following ladies had their handicaps reduced by one shot, Collette McAleavey, Eileen Fitzsiomns, Kathleen Mallon, Moya Brady, and Valerie Gordon. Una Culinane and Ann McDonald each lost two shots from their handicap.
