Paddy leads Seniors Championship

Paddy leads Seniors Championship

PADDY Digby tops the County Armagh Seniors Championship leaderboard at the half-way stage.

With 67 points from collated from the opening six rounds, Paddy finds himself six points clear of the chasing pack.

But with six rounds of the Wednesday competition still to play, and some formidable opposition involved, an exciting climax is inevitable.

Winston Gordon leads the chasing pack behind Paddy on 61 points. But a gap of 11 points separates him and Brendan McKinney. Brian McGuigan, Roy Turner and Pascal Turner are also still very much in contention with points tallys in the 40s, with Gerry McCreesh, Marty Oliver, John Lowe and Johnny Palmer close behind with 30-plus points.

Tim takes winning to new level

Tim Takes winning to a new level

TIM Teehan's nett 63 score in the A&N Shilliday sponsored stroke competition at County Armagh spolied the day for a raft of players who returned mid-sixty nett scores on the day.

The 20-handicapper's late return was two shots better than all the rest. F Smyth was a deserved runner up with nett 65, which might have been a whole lot better had he not dropped five shots over the closing four holes.

Nathan Griimley in contrast, produced a one under par back nine from five over at the turn, to take the Category One prize - birdies at the 6th and 17th highlighted his round.  Brian McGurgan included a birdie three at the 14th hole in his round for a nett 66 and runners up prize in the category.

A two-over par back nine for a nett 66 finish after a seven over par front nine which included double bogeys at the 6th and 8th holes, secured first prize for Richard Stewart in Category 2. It was one shot better than Johnny Palmer in runners up spot with a nett 67.

And Anthony Fagan's nett 66 earned him the Category 3 top prize with Brian McCleland runner up with a nett 68.

The A&N Shilliday sponsored stroke competition at County Armagh was won by Tim Teehan who is presented with his prize by Club Captain Pat McAleavey. Included are runners up (back from left), Brian Cleland, Francis Smyth, Jarlath McReynolds, Johnny Palmer and (front right) Anthony Fagan.

Steady Shea is stableford winner

Steady Shea is stableford winner

SHEA Smyth produced the steadiest of rounds to win the County Armagh Sunday stableford competition by two clear points.

The six-handicapper returned an impressive 41 points to win the event with the club's competition's convenor David Baird runner up on 39 points.

With birdies at the 3rd and 8th holes to accompany seven pars, Shea had amassed 23 points by the half way stage. And despite dropping four shots across the back nine holes, a further 18 points ensured he was uncatchable.

A bogey seven at the 8th hole almost certainly cost David Baird the top prize, although with 39 points he was well satisfied with the runners up prize.

Noel Loye returned the same 39 points but a 'no score' at the 15th hole proved costly. He still topped the Category One prize winner's list where Philip Kelly picked up runners up with 38 points.

Brendan McKinney took the Category 2 first prize with 38 points, winning on countback from Mark Gillen.

And Michael Smyth deservedly claimed the Category 3 prize with 39 points - a massive four points better than his nearest challenger - a very surprised Jim Carberry, on 35 points.

Shea serves a winning score for May Medal

Barman Shea serves a winning score for May Medal

AS one of the County Armagh Golf Club bar staff, Shea Brady has heard his fair share of tales of competitions won and lost on the local course.

But the talented young golfer will now have his own to share with the club punters after winning the May Medal.

Six-handicapper Shea served up a superb six under par nett score 64 to win the second of the club medal competitions this year.

After a flawless level par front nine, he birdie the par five 12th hole. After a string of excellent pars, a bogey at the 18th consumed that saved shot. But his nett six under par was still two shots better than all the rest.

After finishing runner up the previous day, Killylea man Andrew Millar looked well on his way to another winning score when he was one under par after nine holes. But bogeys at the 10th and 16th holes were to cost him. A nett 66 however, secured him the runners up prize - again!.

Alan Pedlow has at last found form and topped the Category 1 prize winners with a nett 67, nipping in in front of Colin Clarke who also returned a nett 67.

Tommy Mackin's nett 68 was the best in Category 2, by way of countback against Patrick Kelly who also returned a nett 68 for the runners up prize.

And Paul McKeown also claimed his first medal prize, winning Category 3 with a nett 69, one shot better than Eamon Toner whose 'eight' at the final hole punished him severely.
