Tommy's becoming Sunday specialist

Tommy's becoming a Sunday specialist

MISSING out on the top prize in the previous Sunday stableford by the narrowest of margins, Tommy Mackin was to go one better to win the very next week.

14-handicapper Tommy returned an untouchable 40points to claim the prize. He produced steady golf on the outward trek to chalk up 19 points by the turn. And with a three over par back nine, added a further 21 points for that winning score.

Barry Scully, even with a birdie to finish his round, just couldn't quite catch Tommy. His 39 points for runners up however, might have been a winning score had he not had a 'no score' at the 15th.

Alan Pedlow led home the category winners with 39 points with Andrew Dunwoody runner up in Category 1 with 38 points.

Tom Fox returned a similar 38 points to win Category 2, just beating on countback another 38 points scorer in Kenny Spence.

And Tom Donnelly's 38 points was two better than Henry Lyttle's 36 in Category 3.

Anthony is Henry White winner

HIS card may reflect a measure of safety in the final three holes, but even with three bogeys to finish Anthony McElmeel's nett 61 was the outstanding score which clinched the the Henry White Memorial Cup at County Armagh.

A three-over-par back nine, which included a birdie at the par five 12th, after a steady front nine, where six shots were dropped, secured the coveted trophy for 18-handicapper Anthony by a massive four shots.

Philip White, proprietor of Philip White Tyres Ltd, Armagh, and sponsor of the Henry White Memorial Cup, joined Club Captain Pat McAlaeavey for the presentation following the day long open stroke competition.

A previous winner, Jim Carberry had to settle for the runners up prize on this occasion. His nett 65 was the next best, but still way off the winning score set by Anthony.

Honorary Treasurer Pat Brannigan also returned a nett 65 but conceded that runners up spot to Jim on countback.

In fourth place was Francis Grimley with a nett 66 which might have been a serious challenge to the day's top score had he not recorded a triple bogey at the first hole and a double bogey at the par five 8th.

Winston Gordon was back in the winners enclosure to collect fifth prize and will almost certainly incur the wrath of the handicap convenor on the back of a winning run.

And Paul Doyle who has spent the last few weeks picking up prizes for his son Caolan, was himself on the receiving end this time around for sixth place, after returning a nett 67.

The final prize of the day went to Chris Stockdale who also returned a nett 67 - four double bogeys on his card almost certainly his downfall.
