Caolan grows his prize haul

Caolan grows his prize haul

CAOLAN Doyle added yet another prize to his growing list in what has been a hugely successful season for the young golfer at County Armagh Golf Club by winning the recent Sunday Stableford.

The 10-handicapper was simply way better than all the rest with a superb 45 points. A birdie four at the par-five 8th hole helped boost his points tally for the front nine to 22.

And further birdies at the 12th and 14th holes set him on his way to an even better 23 points tally for the back nine holes.

Even the club's most inform player Andrew Millar was unable to catch him. The Killylea man, who plays of a handicap of two, returned an impressive 44 points for his gross 64 to lift the runners up prize.

In Category One meanwhile, Philip Kelly was equally impressive with 43 points for his two-under par round. Shea Brady was a point further adrift on 42 for his one-under par round to lift the category runners up prize.

C Hughes 42 points won Category 2 where Derek McKeever claimed second prize with an excellent 42 points.

And Brendan O'Hea led home the Category 3 golfers with 41 points. Legal-eagle John George Willis runner up on 38 points.

Victory for Kevin in Connolly Cup

Victory for Kevin in Connolly Cup

KEVIN Boyd was the proud recipient of the Connolly Cup after producing the winning score in County Armagh Golf Club's annual scratch competition for 19-28 handicappers.

Mrs Pat Connolly, wife of the late Brian, in whose memory the event is played for, presented Kevin with the magnificent silverware piece in front of a packed clubhouse at the weekend.

Quite a number of members gathered in the club for the scratch cup competition's presentation and as well as joining in the celebrations, many sampled the superb cuisine being served in the Green Room Restaurant.

It was undoubtedly Kevin's best round of the year and his Gross 85 score was deserving of the his efforts, albeit wining on countback from Gerry Doyle who also returned a gross 85 score.

Gerry will no doubt reflect on what might have been ... had he not opened with a double bogey or indeed suffered the same double bogey score at the 8th hole.

P McParland claimed the Nett Prize in the competition with a nett 66.

Webster Cup joy for Brian

Webster Cup joy for Brian

BRIAN McGuigan will have his name engraved on the Webster Cup after producing the winning round in the scratch competition at County Armagh

Playing off a handicap of 10, Brian shot a gross 75 to clinch the trophy which is played for annually in memory of the former club member Billy Webster.

It was a superb one-over par back nine which saw him triumph. After bogeying the first three holes and the 5th, he birdied the sixth to somewhat repair the damage, but dropped a further shot at the 8th.

However, he kicked off the back nine with birdie, par, birdie, par before dropping another shot. Two further bogeys at 16 and 17 were recorded but his gross 75 was to prove the best on the day among the club's 10-18 handicappers.

Paul Corvan's regular weekly practice paid off handsomely when he picked up the runners up prize in the competition. His gross 76 was achieved with a one over par back nine after a five over par outward trek.

Ian Ritchie meanwhile, added to his recent prize haul after signing for the best nett score on the day - an outstanding nett 59. But it was not without pain - incurring the wrath of the handicap convenor with a five-shot cut for recent achievements.

James lifts Woods trophy

James lifts Woods trophy

FLAME-HAIRED James Conlon fired the winning scratch score to win the Woods Trophy at County Armagh.

The young golfer, who plays off a handicap of six, shot a superb gross 71 to win the coveted shield which is played for annually by the club's 6-9 handicappers.

One under par after nine holes, with birdies at the 2nd and 9th, James dropped only his second shot at the 11th. But he recovered this with a birdie at very next hole only to drop a further shot at the 13th and another at the 15th before completing his round with three pars for a gross 71.

Marty Oliver, playing off a handicap of eight, was just a shot behind and deservedly picked up the runners up prize with a gross 72.

Birdies at the opening hole and the 7th saw Marty out in level par, his only blemish a double bogey five at the third hole. On the homeward trek he also dropped shots at the  10th and 16th holes but his gross 72 was every bit deserving of the runners up prize.

Meanwhile, in the 0-5 handicap Category, Andrew Millar once again confirmed his brilliant form of late by taking the prize with a gross 67.
