Roy the boy wins Tuesday qualifier

ROY Turner was the first winner of the new mid-week qualifying competitions at County Armagh.

Returning a top score of 40 points, he edged the win on countback from Martin Gill who also returned a similar score.

The white-marker qualifying competition has been introduced by Club Competitions Convenor Davy Baird for at least the month of September golfers suffering withdrawal symptoms since the competition of the Tuesday Cup.

More than sixty took to the course for the first event with some excellent scoring - the best of the day from 10-handicapper Roy Turner who returned 19 and 21 points front and back nines respectively.

Martin Gill's 40 points was, in contrast, 21 and 19 points front and back - birdie 2s at the 9th and 11th holes helping him on the way.

Gerard McCoy was one of three players just a point in arrears on 39 points, Paul Doyle and Phil Kelly the others who picked up 4th and 5th prizes.

Ben Simpson took the Seniors Prize with 38 points. And Stewart Lee recorded the Best Gross Score on the day with 34points

Sean’s a convincing winner in Dalzell’s stableford

Sean’s a convincing winner in Dalzell’s stableford

DESPITE a ‘no-score’ at the 16th Lakes hole, Sean Branningan was still untouchable in the Dalzell’s of Markethill sponsored stableford competition at County Armagh.

A massive 24 points from the front nine holes set Sean on his way to a convincing victory. And even with that ‘dink’ he still managed to add a further 21 points to make up a winning score of 45points.

Leslie Lynas paid dearly for his ‘dink’ at the par 3 11th hole, but with 43 points deservedly clinched the runner’s up prize on the day.

Pearse McBride shared his pain with a double bogey at the 1st and a triple bogey and ‘no-score’ at the 18th hole. However, his steady scoring otherwise saw him sign for 41 points and take first prize in Category 1. Mark Loughran was runner up with 40 points.

In Category 2 Darren O’Hagan’s 41 points earned him first prize with Conor McAneaney a point further adrift on 40 points, taking the runner’s up prize.

Aiden McParland’s better back nine - with a final score of 39 points – earned him first prize in Category 3, ahead of Nicky Currie who also returned 39 points.

Jarleth McReynolds produced the best Gross Score, 39 points.

Thoroughbred Paul strokes to victory

Thoroughbred Paul strokes to victory

PAUL Corvan has confirmed his thoroughbred status on the County Armagh Golf course with victory in the recent Club Stroke event.

The 10-handicapper shot an impressive gross three-over par, nett 63 to win the Sunday competition.

A birdie 2 at the 7th hole helped his front nine cause after he dropped shots at the 3rd, 4th and 8thholes. Surprisingly the relatively easy par five 12th hole proved troublesome and he dropped another shot. But he quickly recovered this with a fine birdie 2 at the very next hole. Between this and the finish there was to be but one further blemish – a bogey at the 17th. But his nett 63 was still to be the best on the day.

Alex Nesbitt was just a shot behind the galloping Corvan with a nett 64 – birdies at the 2nd and 15th holes the highlight of the 12-handicapper’s round.

Adam Cromwell edged the first prize in Category 1 from his father Neil. Both returned nett 66 scores, but on countback it was the young protégé who emerged with the winning score. Worthy of note from this pairing, between them they recorded eight birdies!

Meanwhile, Danny McGee was another to return a nett 66 and walked away with the top prize in Category 2 where Turlough Brady was the delighted runner up on nett 72.

Anthony Fegan’s nett 68 earned him first prize in Category 3 – despite a triple bogey and double bogey start to his round. And Philip Devlin clinched the runner’s up prize with a nett 69.

Ricky's a first-time winner

Ricky’s a first –time winner

NEWCOMER Ricky Dobbs picked up the first major prize of his golfing career after winning the Professional’s Competition at County Armagh Golf Club.

The young golfer who only joined the city club earlier this year, chalked up an impressive 45 points to pick up Pro Alan Rankin’s prize presented annually.

Ricky’s excellent 24 points from the back nine holes complimented 21 on the front nine for that impressive top score, which was two points better than all the rest on the day.

John Brannigan was the nearest challenger on 42 points and deservedly picked up the runner’s up prize – birdies at the 4th and 9th holes helping him on his way.

Michael Curley also returned 42 points to take the Category 1 handicap first prize – two points better than Kieran Donnelly on 42. Kieran collected the runners up prize.

Christopher Stockdale made a return to the winner’s enclosure with his 41points the best in Category 2. Darren O’Hagan was runner up but will have been sorely disappointed by his hat-trick of double bogeys to finish!

Gerry Cullen meanwhile, was the top scorer in Category 3 with 39 points and pipped Neal Cassin – also returning 39 points – to first prize by virtue of a better back nine.

John Maguire’s 36points claimed the Best Gross prize on the day.
