CAPTAIN'S DAY REPORT AND PHOTOS

ACCOUNTANT Noel Conn produced all the correct figures to win Richard Black's Captain's Day prize at County Armagh Golf Club.

His 41 points score was the best of the Captain's stableford competition which was hosted over two-days and attracted a field of almost 300 golfers.

More than 50 ladies and the club's many juvenile boys and girls also joined in  the competition for an array of superb prizes.

Somewhat overcast skies greeted golfers on Friday, but throughout the main event on Saturday the sun shone brightly on a magnificently manicured city course.

Strategically placed pins on the greens proved challenging and was reflected in the finishing scores over the two days.

Noel Conn however, mastered it manfully to produce the winning score. The 23 handicapper amassed 22 points across the front nine holes and with a birdie two at the 11 th as part of a with a back nine which yielded a further 19 points, his 41 total was always going to be hard to beat. He could even afford to throw in a ‘no score' at the 17 th !

Stephen Catterall was his nearest rival with 40 points – 20 points from each front and back nine holes. It was however, enough only to secure him the Category 1 first prize.

Nicholas Currie also returned 40 points which earned him the Category 3 first prize. And Gareth Frizell with 38 points from his round which included a birdie two at the 7 th hole, was rewarded with first prize in Categroy 2.

Past Captains, Presidents, club members and friends packed the County Armagh clubhouse throughout the day, enjoying morning coffee with the Captain and his wide family circle. Later the same evening his special guests were treated to a sumptuous meal served by the club's Green Room Restaurant.

Captain Richard Black spoke at length about his year in office, paying tribute to Council for their support, individually and collectively. Greens Convenor Tom Calvert came in for special praise for the magnificent condition of the course.

There was also a special word for his wife Ann with whom he celebrates 35 years of marriage and who joined him in presenting the many prizes on the evening.
